Reducing fleet idling: the math

Nobody budgets for idling, because no invoice ever says "idling" on it. The cost hides inside your fuel line, spread across every vehicle, every day. The math makes it visible.

The gallons-per-hour math

A light-duty gas truck at idle burns roughly half a gallon per hour; a heavy-duty diesel closer to 0.8–1.0 gallons per hour with accessories running. Take a modest example: a 20-vehicle fleet of pickups and vans averaging 45 minutes of unnecessary idle per vehicle per day.

• 45 min/day ≈ 0.375 gallons per vehicle per day (at 0.5 gal/hr)
• × 20 vehicles × 250 working days ≈ 1,875 gallons a year
• At $3.60/gallon, that's roughly $6,750 a year in fuel spent going nowhere
• Heavier vehicles or colder climates can double it — and that's before extra engine hours pull maintenance intervals forward

Why drivers idle

Cab comfort, "I was only going to be a minute," habit, and the honest belief that restarts hurt the engine — a belief that stopped being true decades ago for modern starters and fuel injection. None of it is malicious. All of it is invisible to the driver, because the driver never sees the aggregate number.

What actually changes behavior

Measurement, visibly shared. Fleets that publish a weekly idle ranking — by driver or by vehicle — reliably watch the number fall in the first month, because nobody wants the top spot. Pair the ranking with a reasonable policy (no idle past five minutes, documented exceptions for PTO equipment and extreme weather) and the savings hold.
