Plug-in vs hardwired GPS trackers: which does your fleet need?

Every fleet tracking rollout hits the same early fork: plug-in trackers you install yourself in minutes, or hardwired units an installer fits out of sight. Both end up on the same live map. The right answer depends on your vehicles and your risks — and plenty of fleets should run both.

The case for plug-in (OBD-II)

• Install in under five minutes per vehicle — a 20-truck fleet is live in an afternoon
• No installer cost, no vehicle downtime
• Reads rich engine data through the OBD-II port: odometer, fault codes, engine hours
• Moves between vehicles easily when you sell or replace a truck

The case for hardwired

• Covert — a driver or thief can't glance under the dash and unplug it
• Ignition detection and reliable power on vehicles with quirky OBD ports
• Works on anything with a 12/24V system, including pre-1996 vehicles and equipment
• Immobilization-ready where theft response justifies it (and where lawful)

The honest trade-offs

Plug-in's weakness is the same as its strength: it's removable. You'll get a tamper alert the moment one is unplugged — with last known location — but an alert is a response, not a prevention. Hardwired's weakness is friction: installer scheduling, an hour per vehicle, and a unit that stays with the truck when it's sold.

How fleets actually decide

The pattern we see: plug-in for the general fleet — vans, pickups, anything driven by long-tenured staff — and hardwired for high-theft-risk vehicles, vehicles that leave the yard overnight, and anything a subcontractor drives.
